100 Years of Public Health

Wellness Is Collaborative

Ocean County prioritizes health, and we have our community to thank for it! For a century now, residents have collaborated directly with the Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) to promote wellness and stop the spread of illnesses. Our county is united by a sense of responsibility to our neighbors.

This joint effort depends on awareness, however. To ensure future generations continue this partnership, OCHD is celebrating its centennial by educating the community on the variety of services we offer and the role residents play in preserving public health.

Take a look at the Services & Programs Spotlight below to learn how OCHD protects the county – and how we can all protect each other.

Communicable Disease Unit

The Communicable Disease Unit (CDU) is responsible for monitoring and investigating reportable diseases/conditions in humans and domestic companion animals.

The Unit conducts patient interviews and consults facility administrators to gather source/exposure information, address possible exposures, and provides disease-specific education on prevention. The team also speaks with medical providers to obtain relevant clinical information and coordinates specimen submission to public health laboratories.

CDU’s other responsibilities include conducting required immunization audits of daycares and schools, investigating rabies exposures, and coordinating municipal rabies vaccination clinics for dogs and cats.

Contact us below to schedule a vaccine or report a possible exposure.

Health Education & Promotion

The Health Education Unit coordinates an array of community activities, public health, and educational programs.

Programming includes public presentations, health fairs, distribution of health literature, and even professional development and/or continuing education for healthcare workers.

Educational sessions are provided to schools, the public, or any group requesting a presentation.

Among the partners Health Education coordinates with are community organizations, faith-based institutions, county hospitals, local agencies, schools, and consortiums. Each enables the Health Department to better pinpoint areas of need and address them in a collaborative manner.

The Health Department is also a host site for Distance Learning through the  New Jersey Learning Management Network (NJLMN), a resource for public health workforce development, training, and certification.
