100 Years of Public Health

Wellness Is Collaborative

Ocean County prioritizes health, and we have our community to thank for it! For a century now, residents have collaborated directly with the Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) to promote wellness and stop the spread of illnesses. Our county is united by a sense of responsibility to our neighbors.

This joint effort depends on awareness, however. To ensure future generations continue this partnership, OCHD is celebrating its centennial by educating the community on the variety of services we offer and the role residents play in preserving public health.

Take a look at the Services & Programs Spotlight below to learn how OCHD protects the county – and how we can all protect each other.

Ocean County’s Health Services Programs Spotlight

Intoxicated Driver Resource Center (IDRC)

OCHD administers IDRC to provide a professional education and screening intervention to any county residents convicted of an alcohol- or drug-related motor vehicle violation.

Individuals are assigned by their trial judge to either a 12- or 48-hour program based on the number or severity of offenses.

If appropriate, the individual will be referred to an IDRC-affiliated agency for a full assessment and must comply with any treatment recommendations made in order to regain their driving privileges.

Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services

The Department of Substance Abuse, Addiction, and Opioid Dependency is a comprehensive department that facilitates programs and initiatives to combat the overdose epidemic. These include both evidence-based programs and innovative programming, like:

  • Substance Use Prevention Programming
  • Municipal Alliance Program
  • Intoxicated Driver Resource Center

Additionally, two County bodies, The Local Advisory Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (LACADA), which assess substance abuse in Ocean County, and the County Alliance Steering Subcommittee (CASS) hold public meetings on the 4th Tuesday at 4:00pm and 2:45pm, respectively. Residents are welcome to participate and join the fight against substance use and overdose.
