100 Years of Public Health

Wellness Is Collaborative

Ocean County prioritizes health, and we have our community to thank for it! For a century now, residents have collaborated directly with the Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) to promote wellness and stop the spread of illnesses. Our county is united by a sense of responsibility to our neighbors.

This joint effort depends on awareness, however. To ensure future generations continue this partnership, OCHD is celebrating its centennial by educating the community on the variety of services we offer and the role residents play in preserving public health.

Take a look at the Services & Programs Spotlight below to learn how OCHD protects the county – and how we can all protect each other.

Ocean County’s Health Services Programs Spotlight

Women Infants & Children (WIC)

WIC is a successful public health nutrition program that provides wholesome food, nutrition education, breastfeeding education, improved access to regular health care and social services, and community support for income-eligible women who are pregnant and post-partum, infants, and children up to five years old.

WIC participants receive individualized nutrition education plans and follow-up counseling sessions with experienced Program Nutritionists, Public Health Nutritionists, and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists.

All WIC families receive breastfeeding education and support. WIC Peer Counselors provide support throughout pregnancy and infancy. OCHD’s clinics also have an on-site Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

WIC families also receive access to online, remote, and in-person nutrition education classes. These cover an array of topics, including infant nutrition, healthy weight, breastfeeding, food allergies, and nutritional deficiencies.

Health Preparedness & Planning

The Health Preparedness & Planning Unit is tasked with coordinating public health emergency response.

It works with response partners like the Ocean County Office of Emergency Management and municipal emergency management coordinators to provide well-coordinated response to emergencies.

The unit also handles numerous planning projects, including bioterrorism, natural disasters, public health threats, preparedness, and planning. It is also responsible for coordinating community health-planning projects and maintaining the County’s Health Alert Network and Medical Reserve Corp Program.
