OCHD is Offering Residents Free Diabetes Education Programs at Walmart Grocery Stores!

(Toms River) – Did you ever wonder how beneficial it could be to do your grocery shopping with an expert on eating healthy and while on a budget? Well, now you can. The Ocean County Health Department Diabetes Prevention and Control Program is offering this unique opportunity called How to Shop Healthy on a Budget With a Registered Dietician with three free sessions being held at area Walmart stores.

“The Ocean County Health Department is excited about this new program and we are encouraging residents, especially those with diabetes, to spend some time with our professionals and learn more about the benefits of shopping and eating healthy while staying within your budget constraints,” explains Freeholder Gerry P. Little, Liaison to the Ocean County Board of Health. ‘You’ll be surprised just how much more there is to learn from these free educational programs whether you’re shopping for a family or just yourself.”

The program will not only help you shop smart, but our registered dieticians will stimulate your taste buds by cooking up a few delicious menu ideas to demonstrate just how tasty these healthy dishes can be and so easy to prepare.

“We want people to understand that eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive. Additionally, healthy meals don’t have to be tasteless and really can be delicious without having to spend a lot of time in the kitchen preparing,” says Daniel Regenye, Ocean County Health Department Public Health Coordinator. “It’s not easy for diabetics, they have many challenges when trying to come up with smart choices and still enjoy what they are eating.”

“The Ocean County Health Department’s goal is to give individuals with diabetes the ability to manage the disease by changing their eating habits, exercising and discovering new ways to live with this disease,” says Meg McCarthy-Klein, MS, RD OCHD. ‘So we invite everyone to visit with us at one – or for all three Walmart dates – and benefit from this special opportunity to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle.”
